SLAM - Establishment of a Fast-Charge Network for Road Axes and Metropolises throughout Germany

The federal government and the automobile industry of Germany have committed to electromobility to ensure future mobility with due regards to environmental aspects and the limited availability of fossil fuels. However, a consistent spread of electromobility can only be successful if a reliable and easily accessible network of charging stations exists and if users are able to charge the necessary amount of energy for their daily travels within a short amount of time.

The project SLAM, therefore, aims at developing the basis for an economical and demand-oriented distribution of a fast-charge infrastructure to facilitate the spread of electric vehicles and promote transregional mobility. Examining the challenges for the establishment of an extensive fast-charge infrastructure as well as suitable business models, the setup of a test-network, and the accompanying research of user and mobility behavior are essential conrnerstones of this project.

In this context, the main objective of RWTH Aachen University is the development of a location concept for the fast-charge infrastructure in areas of high population density in regards to traffic junctions, traffic flows, available charging infrastructure, user studies, density of electric vehicles, future electric vehicle fleets, and mobility concepts. A simulation tool based on this concept shall aid investors in choosing suitable sites for fast-charge stations. The Human-Computer Interaction Center (HCIC) will research user requirements to support the location concept. Furthermore, the HCIC will perform user studies concerning the acceptance of and preferences for the fast-charge infrastructure, and electromobility in general, to support the setup of the test-network.
