Cluster of Excellence "Integrative Production Technology for High-Wage Countries"

Subproject - Self-optimizing Production Systems

This cluster of excellence is a collaboration of over 20 institutes of RWTH Aachen University from the area of material and production engeneering, all working together to research the basis of a sustainable production strategy. The aim is to secure production in high-wage countries in an increasingly globalized world.

The subproject “self-optimizing production systems” develops production systems that can make autonomous decisions by using models based on human cognition (cognitive control units). These cognitive decision models are located on several levels of the production, from the production machine to the production network, and closely interconnected.

As the systems make semi-autonomous decisions and their basis for decision-making grows increasingly more complex it is also increasingly more complex for people to understand and optimize the production sequence and decision-making basis. Therefore methods and techniques are developed to enable people to understand and optimize crucial production parameters. This will also help in making the systems’ basis for decision-making transparent and reveal essential parameters for optimization.

HCIC co-authored the proposal for the continuation of this cluster of excellence.
