Acceptance as integral part of the development of alternative fuels (Tailor-made Fuels from Biomass/Core Interaction Field, CIF 4)

To reduce carbon-dioxide emissions in the mobility sector and become more independent of fossil fuels, alternative fuels based on biomass have been developed in the cluster of excellence „Tailor made fuels from biomass“ since the first funding phase of the Excellence Initiative of the German Federal and State Governments in 2007. Currently, more than 70 researchers from various disciplines conduct research in interdisciplibary teams on the synthesis and combustion, as well as the optimization of alternative fuels. The cluster has two major integrated research fields,

IRF-A: From Biomass to Biofuels (fuel production)

IRF-B: From Biofuels to Propulsion (fuel combustion)

which are coordinated and exchange knowledge in the CIF (Core-Interaction Field). In CIF, the entire process, from production of biofuels to propulsion in the combustion engine, is modelled and described. Processes are modelled using different methods and instruments, in order to forecast results. The Chair of Communication Science is part of CIF4 and investigates, in close cooperation with associated partners, the acceptance and public perception of alternative fuels, their lifecycle and corresponding infrastructure (e.g. biorefineries) using empirical-experimental methods from the social sciences. The aim is to integrate acceptance-relevant usage requirements and preferences of the public already in early stages of the design process of alternative fuels.
