TABULA – Tangibles on Multitouch-Tables for Teaching Computer Science

Computer Science is in comparison with other natural sciences very abstract and for new learners a complex and difficult area. Therefore it is necessary to design a touchable learning process with individual feedback for users, which leads to a positive learning experience. Touchable learning elements enable the creation of mental models and cognitive concepts by users. By using Multitouch-Tables consisting of a display as physical workspace for users, all of the teaching content can be visibly shown. In addition to the Multitouch-Table, TABULA provides Tangibles, touchable objects that operate with the table. Tangibles can be dropped, moved and manipulated on the table by users. This working method can lead to an increasing performance and supports the pleasure of working with technology. The high flexibility of TABULA enables fast and individual feedback for learners and can be suited to the individual learning progress. This has a positive influence on the motivation and the self-learning.

TABULA also offers a cooperative learning environment, which means that multiple learners can work on tasks together. A distant teacher can also be involved in the learning process due to the transfer of digital content of the table in real-time and can support the learners with direct reactions and references to the table-content.

The primary target group is the practice-oriented university and school education of Computer Science. But the principle of TABULA can also be used in work-related training courses where older employees are able to learn the concepts of computer science in an easier way.
